Parenting Tips of the Day - June 24th

Here are the Parenting Tips of the Day.

• Bendy or Flexy Straws are much easier for little ones to drink from than straight straws.  I keep a bundle of them inside a travel toothbrush holder in my purse or diaper bag.  Not all restaurants have these Flexy straws, so carrying my own makes it much easier on my son. 
• While my son is taking a bath, I usually clean up the bathroom counters or even floss my teeth!!  This way I can still keep an eye on him and get something else done too.  It is a huge help!!
• Empty baby food jars are a great way to keep your office supplies in order.  I use them to store paper clips, pushpins, rubber bands, etc.  It keeps my drawers nice and neat.  I also use them to store herbs in the kitchen.  It is a great way to recyle!!

Menu Plan Mondays - June 21st

I need to be better about posting my Menu Plan for the week.   We have been sick twice in a row and this is the first week we had that we were not sick and I got mostly caught up with everything at home.

Here is our Menu for this week.

• Monday : Breakfast for Dinner - Scrambled eggs with hash brown potatoes
• Tuesday : Chicken Fajitas using McCormick Recipe Cards which already have herbs for the recipe.
• Wednesday : Pasta Night
• Thursday : Taco Night - Homemade Tacos using ground beef
• Friday : Pizza Night - My day off, so get a pizza out of the freezer and put it int he oven.

Savings for the week - June 13th to 19th

This week I had some great shopping trips to Kohl's.  I got some $10 off a $20 purchase to Kohl's from the Newspaper so I went and got Father's Day present for my husband, some Birthday presents for my son and nephew, and a  Welcome present for my nephew who I will get to meet for the first time in about a week.  :o)
I also had a great trip to Target where I got some Frosted Mini Wheats Bite Size for my son (who LOVES these now!).  I also got him a Toy Story 3 toy for his birthday with a coupon.  My trips to Walgreens and CVS were also great.  Here is the breakdown.

• Kohl's : I did multiple trips to Kohl's so I could use all the coupons I had.  My total savings was $169.82 and spent $59.89.  I got a water sprinkler and a soccer ball for my son, two bathing suit tops for me, and 2 packs of socks and a polo for my husband plus the three toys I got for my nephew.  Not bad for all those things!!
• CVS : I got some boxes of chocolate that were buy one get one for 1 cent, Old Spice Body Washes, Shick Hydro blades, Gillette Fusion ProGlide, and EPT test.  I saved $120.98 and spent $29.17.  I am also sending for a free gift when I purchased the EPT test.  I should get it in the mail later.  I also earned a ton of Extra Care Bucks.
• Walgreens : I got some Nivea Body Wash for Men, Reach toothbrushes, Stickers for my son's Potty Training Chart, and a Hydro Shick Razor which I will send in for a Full Rebate.  Total savings was $39.50 and total spending was $14.70.  I also earned a ton of Register Rewards. 
• Target : I got some groceries, a Toy Story 3 toy for my son's birthday, and Listerine.  I saved $38.69 and spent $21.66.
• BJ's : I got some groceries.  I spent $37.64 and saved $8.50.

Home Garden Update

Here are photos of the Home Garden.  I moved most of the plants to bigger pots so they have more room to grow.
The Tomato Plant is doing OK, but it looks like the leaves are getting sick or a bug is eating them so my husband gave it some bug killer.  Unfortunately this means my tomatoes will no longer be organic so I need to plant a new one and look for Organic solutions so I can keep the bugs off my plant.

The Pepper Plant is doing awesome.  It still has no peppers but it does have flowers so soon we should have peppers!!  I use them to make Sofrito and for Fajitas, Pizza, etc.  Yum!!

The Basil and Cilantro plants are also growing great.  The Basil smells great and is ready to pick.  The cilantro is ready to pick too but I was reading that if I dry it then it loses the flavor so I need to pick it when I need to use it right away.

The Onion plant is the only one that is not doing so great.  I am not sure if it is growing at all.  I will have to read up on it and take a look.  I moved it to a smaller plant to see if that will help it.

 The Picture below shows (Left to Right) the Forget Me Not, Chamomile, Rosemary, and Cilantro plants.

Stay Tuned for more photos of my Home Garden.  Hopefully soon we will have Peppers and Tomatoes so I can show pictures of the actual veggies.  I am thinking about planting a Strawberry Plant too.  We shall see!! 

Parenting Tips of the Day - June 17th

These are a bit late, but here are the tips of the day.

• Keep Audiobooks or CDs of your kids' favorite stories in the car.  It is a great way to keep kids engaged on long trips if you do not have a portable DVD player.  If the book you want is not available as an Audiobook, you can just read it out loud and record it.  
• Dry erase boards are great for keeping older kids busy and entertained in the car during long trips.  They can practice writing out their letters and numbers or just draw pictures.
• Turn a mateless sock into a baby size heating pad by filling it up with rice.  You can place it in the microwave for 30 secs, then place it on their tummy to ease gas pains.  Test it carefully to make sure it is not too hot for your baby!!

Parents Tips of the Day - June 10th

Here are the tips for this week:

• Control Odor : Use a dryer sheet inside your diaper pail to control odor.
• Encourage Kids to drink more H2O : Make it fun by using a plastic wine glass, a fun straw, and decorate the rim with a slice of fruit or even a drink umbrella.
• Potty Training Tip : Before you start potty training, make a chart and record what you find in your baby's diaper every hour.  Do it every day for about two weeks.  This will help determine your baby's "going" pattern and will help make potty training a bit easier.

Remember, most of the tips I get from Parents magazine.  They have a section called It Worked for Me and in it they list a few tips in every issue.  I also post some other tips I find helpful from other mom's or other articles I read.

Parents Tip from Parents Magazine

My baby is a toddler now so he eats the same stuff, more or less, that my husband and I eat.  I wanted to pass this along because I know a lot of new moms who have little ones soon to be starting solids.

Bigges Loser winner -Mike Ventrella

I just had to share.  I believe what this man did was amazing!!

He started at 526 lbs.

He lost 264 lbs!!! 

My favorite was Sam from the Gray team, but I did love Mike and was happy to see him get healthy and in the end win it all.

My understanding is that they are now filming Season 10 which will air this September.  So if you LOVE the Biggest Loser like we do, stay tuned!  Jillian and Bob are amazing at what they do.  

Congrats Mike!!!!!!

Parent Tips of the Day - June 3rd

Here are three tips for this week.

• Eliminate Twin Fighting : On a calendar, designate dates for each twin.  On their day, they get to make decisions like which movie to watch or game to play or book to read, etc.  This will help ease the fighting among siblings.  I am sure it will also work for non twin siblings.
• Photo Grocery List : I thought this one is fun when I read it the first time.  Use photo clip art to make your child their own grocery shopping list.  It will teach them plus it will make them feel like they are helping out. 
• Recycle Restaurant Kid's Drink Cups : Use them to hold snacks in the car.  The cups fit nicely in car cup holders.

Sorry for the abscence - Meet Our Kitties

I know it has been probably over a week since the last post.  We are officially in Summer Time here in FL which means bad thunderstorms on a daily basis.  The area where we live gets hit really bad with lightning so we don't use our electronics when that happens.  Needless to say, to add to the mix we had visitors for Memorial Day weekend and my son is now sick with a cold and croup.  Yikes!  To make it worse, I am now starting to feel a sore throat so more than likely I caught it too and my husband said he feels the same as I do. 
On the brighter side, at least our cats are healthy!!  The photo above shows all our kitties.
